Everything You Need to Know About Kitchen Sinks

The kitchen sink is more than just a basin for washing dishes—it’s one of the most used fixtures in any home. Whether you’re prepping ingredients, cleaning up after meals, or filling pots for cooking, the sink is at the heart of your kitchen workflow. Choosing the right kitchen sink ensures both practicality and aesthetic appeal in your kitchen design.

Why the Right Kitchen Sink Matters

A well-chosen kitchen sink enhances your experience by providing ample space, ease of cleaning, noise control, and style cohesion with your countertops and cabinets. It’s an essential investment that should balance durability, functionality, and visual design.

Sink Bowl Configurations

Columbus Granite carries a variety of in-stock bowl options to meet every kitchen’s size, usage, and layout needs:

  • Small Single Bowl Sinks: Ideal for compact kitchens or secondary prep areas. Approximate size: 21” x 15¾”.
  • Large Single Bowl Sinks: Offer generous space for pots and pans. Approximate size: 28” x 16”.
  • Double Bowl Sinks (50/50): Allow multitasking, such as soaking and rinsing simultaneously. Approximate size: 30” x 16”.

Sink Materials

Material affects not only the durability of your sink but also how it looks and sounds during use. Columbus Granite offers the following kitchen sink materials:

Stainless Steel

A classic and versatile option, stainless steel sinks are known for their resilience and ease of cleaning. We offer both:

  • Pressed (Rounded Corner): Seamless and easy to clean with a more traditional look.
  • Handmade (Square Corner): Premium style with defined edges for a modern appearance.

Granite Composite

Made from a blend of granite stone and acrylic resin, these sinks offer high durability, scratch resistance, and a stone-like matte finish. Available in various color options to match your countertop.

Other Sink Materials (Custom Order)

Heavier sinks such as fireclay, cast iron, or apron-front (farmhouse) models can be used with proper cabinet support platforms. These require custom installation and are not typically mounted directly to the countertop like lighter sinks.

Mounting Styles

Understanding how your sink is mounted helps determine compatibility with your countertop and cabinetry. Common options include:

  • Undermount: Installed beneath the countertop surface for a sleek, seamless look.
  • Drop-In (Topmount): Sits on top of the counter with a visible lip; easier to install and replace.
  • Farmhouse (Apron-Front): Exposed front design that adds charm and requires specialized support.

For a more detailed overview, see this guide on sink mounting styles.

Faucets and Accessories

Pairing the right faucet with your sink is essential for both style and performance. Consider these features when choosing a faucet:

  • Single-Handle vs. Dual-Handle: Single-handle faucets offer simplicity, while dual-handle faucets give precise temperature control.
  • Pull-Down or Pull-Out Sprayers: Great for deep cleaning and rinsing all areas of the sink. Read more about the differences in this faucet comparison guide.
  • Finish Options: Stainless steel, matte black, brushed nickel, and chrome to complement your hardware and appliances.

Columbus Granite can drill custom faucet holes to match your faucet model, soap dispensers, or filtration systems.

Important Note About Plumbing

Columbus Granite does not perform plumbing work. All plumbing, including disconnection of old faucets and drains, must be completed before our team arrives for installation. After the new countertop and sink are installed, you will need a licensed plumber to reconnect your faucet, garbage disposal, and drain lines.

Installation and Support Platform Requirements

Most stainless steel and composite sinks can be directly mounted to the countertop. However, heavier sinks such as farmhouse or fireclay models require additional cabinetry support. We can advise on cabinet compatibility and make suggestions where necessary, but can not build support platforms for you. Homeowners are advised to discuss this step of the remodel with your general contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

► What size kitchen sink do I need?

Standard base cabinets are typically 33″ or 36″ wide, which supports most large single bowl or double bowl sinks. Always measure the interior cabinet space before choosing your sink.

► Can I use any faucet with any sink?

Not all sinks and faucets are universally compatible. Make sure your sink has the correct number of faucet holes, or have us drill them precisely to match your faucet model.

► Are granite composite sinks durable?

Yes. Composite sinks are heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and non-porous. They offer long-lasting durability with minimal maintenance.

► Can Columbus Granite install my sink?

Yes. We provide full-service countertop and sink installation, including cutting, mounting, sealing, and faucet hole drilling. However, plumbing must be handled separately. We do not install apron sinks.

► Do you carry bar sinks or bathroom sinks?

Yes. In addition to kitchen sinks, we stock a variety of bar and bathroom sink models. See links below.
