WHAT IS SOAPSTONE AND WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that mostly consists of Talc. They are mostly found in Brazil, India, the US, France, England, and Canada. Soapstone is also found in Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Brazilian soapstone is the most common in the market.
IS SOAPSTONE EXPENSIVE FOR COUNTERTOPS ?

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS COLORS?
Soapstone usually comes in green, gray, blue, and black tones. These are some of the common soapstone types. We usually carry a few types of soapstone colors in our stock in Columbus, and Ohio. Feel free to visit us to view them in person.
ARE SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS DURABLE?
Soapstone is a very soft stone. It is durable from a staining perspective, but it is not a very durable stone from a scratching perspective. Mineral oiling will hide potential future scratches on your soapstone countertops. In addition, it is possible to remove scratches off the soapstone easily by using sandpaper. We recommend rounded edges to go with your new soapstone countertops to prevent shipping on the edges. Rounded edges are ¼” round, 3/8” round, half bullnose and full bullnose.
DOES SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS REQUIRE SEALING?
Soapstone is the only natural stone that does not need to be sealed. Soapstone has a non-porous surface. That is why it will not need a sealer. Soapstone’s non-porous surface makes it bacterial freestone. We recommend that mineral oil is used on the soapstone to hide possible scratches.
HOW OFTEN DOES MINERAL OIL NEED TO BE APPLIED ON SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS?
We recommend that one coat is applied right after installation. Depending upon the need, you should apply mineral oil 4-5 more times to make the darker color permanent.
ARE SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS HEAT RESISTANT?
Soapstone is a heat resistant stone. That is why it is suitable for fireplace and wall covering applications as well.
WHAT IS SOAPSTONE USED FOR?
Soapstone is used for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, fireplace hearths and fireplace surrounds, wall coverings, flooring, shower benches, shower entry curbs, pizza stones, cooking pots, sinks, tabletops, and sculptures.
DOES SOAPSTONE COLOR DARKEN OVER TIME IF IT IS NOT OILED
Yes, the soapstone color will get darker as you use it even if you do not apply a mineral oil coat.
IS SOAPSTONE GOOD FOR COUNTERTOPS?
Depending upon what you expect from your countertops, soapstone may be a good countertop option for you. It would be good to know that soapstone is a soft material so it can scratch easily. On the other hand, it is soft on the look and touch making it a good fit for traditional designs.
